Ever since I started working it's been quite the same cycle every week...

work from mon til sat.
get off late some of the days.
come back home exhausted & hungry.
crash in bed and wake up to work the next day.
do a little shopping or drinking on saturday evenings.
soccer and laundry on sundays.
then back to bed early on sundays to wake up for work on monday.

However... there is always room for improvement.

Somehow no matter how exhausted I get. I need to push myself a little further after work to set out my goals in life... So that I could wake up in the morning to know which direction to go. This would in turn bring a more positive attitude to myself every morning I wake up.

Now that I have mentioned that in my blog. It's a promise I can't break. Here is to a better me...

Why you should keep a positive mind

Whenever we face a difficult situation in which no one can help us out we always like to:

1) Point fingers... typical working environment situation. we like to push the responsibility to someone else. Sooner or later the problem will come back to haunt you until you find a correct solution to solve it.

2) Seek sympathy from peers... who most often wouldn't be able to help you.

3) Get really depressed and lose control of your life. In most situation we get stuck in another world when we give up all hope and think that there is no way out of a messy situation.

Ways I do to keep a positive mind:
ALWAYS REMEMBER, the harder you fall the tougher you get.

Just like the saying in the movie, "Catch me if you can", about 2 mice that fall into a bucket of milk. The first mouse gives up and drowns. The second mouse does not give up and struggles... churning the milk into butter and eventually escapes.

1) Go for a walk to gather your thoughts. Set out new goals or find new ways of achieving old goals in life... that will start the ball rolling to making you feel much better.

2) Get distracted. Read a book/take part in sporting activities

3) (Quite ironic but) Share your thoughts with your friends. It is often best to keep depressing matters/thoughts within yourself. This method helps by clearing your mind by releasing the "pressure" building up deep within your chest.

5 points Singaporeans can improve on...

Over the past 2 years in Sydney, I feel that Singaporeans (in general) have one of the worst attitude in the world. I rarely hang around with most Singaporeans when I am overseas... as I find most of them kinda irritating...

Being a Singaporean, I feel I have a right to shoot myself in the foot. Before I do so, I can say that Singapore is a good place to live in... there is no where else in the world that has a political stability in the government, a good health system, a secure living environment (in terms of security and environmental influence) and so on...

Having lived abroad, returning to Singapore has been a total culture shock. We lack social ethics. Here are some factors that I find horrible in most Singaporeans:

We are Rude. One example is about Singapore's bus patrons are impolite... in Auzzie they thank the bus driver when we alight.
We discriminate foreigners. Seriously, we are a bunch of racist/nationalist people. (example: the PRC stigma)
We do the tissue chopping stuff. I personally feel is disgusting... particularly when one small insignificant tissue pack can represent an actual person sitting down there. I dunno.. but I do feel that most people do share the same sentiments unless you do this kinda stuff.
We are always late. I am sure it happens... in weddings/social gatherings... (the list goes on)... When we say we'll be late by 5-10 mins. We will definitely be late by 30 mins.
We articulate badly. I am not saying that my communications skills are perfect too... but we really need to at least get a perfect spoken/written language in order to be a 1st world country... no wonder no one in Singapore is admitting we are a 1st world country because the outside world couldn't understand what we are talking about. My personal experience in Aussie has been quite an eye opener... what I realised was that we are really fast speakers and we like to do short-cuts when we are spelling things out.

But of course, perfection in everything would never be met.... However, I believe if this social/language problems are solved... together we could make a better Singapore... Probably the best place to be in...

I know my english is horrible but I am doing my best to improve it everyday. It is often irritating to be corrected by family/friends/teachers for the wrong way of pronunciation... some of this words/names/titles include: IKEA (IK-EA) , Three/tree, La(r)sik...

But this one has been bugging me as well: Tuition.

In Singapore we always pronounce the word "Tuition" as 'Tui-tion' or should it be 'Tu-ition'??

Down with a running nose at the moment. I normally would recover from a cold within a day but this has been bugging me for 3 days already. But I will survive.

Normally people would wake up and say: "Another day to work!" or "Another day to school!". Not to sound pessimistic but every morning I have been waking up to "Another day of unemployment!"

Job searching at the moment, not gonna say much about the kind of jobs I am interested in. But will keep things updated on this blog as much as I can.

Note to job seekers:

Surely Something to watch over again!!!...

CGI Effects: 9 / 10
It's probably on pile or even better than lord of the rings. Kudos to the CGI team... amazing works! If not for them there'll be no film.

Action: 9 / 10
Blood blood blood... decapitation... limbs blown off... explosion... arms... you name it they have it.

Story line: 8.5 / 10
Relatively flawless but might have a sequel. Sure to keep you on your feet... till the end.

Basically about aliens stuck in South African because of some unknown reason. They're treated like unwanted refugees and have been allocated to District 9. However due to certain disputes, they have to be extridated from that area to move to District 10. Wikus Van De Merwe was assigned to pass down the deportation orders....

The aliens have weapons with unknown capabilities......

Life in Singapore so far...

Not too bad. Lost my previous handphone number so that means I lost all my previous contacts. Just completed my IELTS paper and am hoping it wouldn't **** up like last time because I didn't know the writing format.

My current schedule: Wake up, breakfast, reading the news, morning nap, lunch, afternoon nap, internet, jogging, dinner, tv, internet and sleep.

Now that IELTS is all done, I look forward to chilling out and waiting for my results. In really need to go overseas to travel. Probably to Taiwan... but no one else is free and Charlene is not yet...

Dad was suggesting that I join him in Chennai, India for a while... but he wouldn't be free... and me travelling alone? I think I rather travel with people, it makes the trip much more fun.

Surprisingly, I miss Australia. The quality and quantity of food is there but not the price. In Singapore I get to play the most 2 times a week of soccer. Whereas in Sydney I'll be playing more frequently to a maximum of 4 times a week. Most of my friends in Singapore are mostly busy with work at the moment but if I were in Australia I'll probably be spending time with them.... if not for my IELTS paper.

i believe that everyone would have on several occasions been affected by peer/family pressure to do the things you would not think you’ll be doing. This effect would be elevated when one is emotionally tensed.

It could be a good or bad influence but one must always remember to filter their comments/advice through your conscious before taking any action.

one simple example that happened to me yesterday… when i was playing dota… (to all who do not know what is “dota”, google “define: dota”)

i was using ‘earth shaker’ yesterday and when we 2 of my teammates were moving in for the kill. however there were 4 heroes on that particular lane, my mind was telling me to just run. my friend still insisted that we could still go in to own them…

it didn’t turn out that way in the end and he then pointed the blame at me for causing all of us to die… wth!?!

IELTS results would be out on friday, which is the day that would decide whether I should fly back to Singapore or not.

If results are bad, I might need to head back to Singapore to resit my IELTS as I would not be able to apply for one asap here. The next opening in Sydney would be in October, by then my student VISA would have ended.

Here is the order task for my PR application:
1) IELTS
2) UNSW Results -> Sent to Engineers Australia to certify
3) Health Check -> Examination of all bodily fluid except sperm
4) Apply for PR (Lots of $$)
5) Get Character Certificate from Singapore (Need to take time and $)

It's finally over!

Thesis binded and submitted on friday afternoon. Hurrey! (Below is from my "Acknowledgements" page, I apologize if I left people out)

After two days of sleepless typing, formating and correcting... I hope it all makes sense. So far the only mistakes I have found in my already printed thesis was the unnumbered content page of the index and the certifying of original content page, where my name was "Eugene Fu Tian Hui" instead of "Eugene Tian Hui, Fu". (Below image)

I started writing my Thesis on Monday evening after I completed the final experiment... then it was coffee, full of self-motivation and perserverence before I finished my Thesis at 9 a.m. on Thursday. I did the printing at home and had to stop to refill my ink catridge in between.

Then when all 136 x 2 pages ("x2" because I had to do 2 copies) were printed, the sleepless me had to drive down to St. Peters to get it in for binding. The binding cost me $76 with an additional $20 for over night charges, for it to be ready by noon the next day. If I wanted to have it printed and binded at Glory near UNSW, it'll cost me $300++.... ridiculous.

The next day, my happiness was delayed as I have to deal with some plumbers who were fixing the leakage at my home. I had to wait till 12:45 pm before I could leave home for the bind shop to get my thesis to get submitted. By 1:30 pm, I reached the general office to get thesis submitted but it was already closed for lunch until 2:30 pm.

So I had no choice but to wait for half an hour in the computer labs before going down to get in queue with close to a dozen other students wanting to settle their enrolment matters...

The office staff recognised me after the number of times I have gone down to complain or to get my assignments from them, allowed me to skip the queue to come forward with my cd and 2 copies of navy blue hardcover books with gold fonts. She got it stamped and told me that was all I needed to do...

I never felt so relief\ved in my life as I think I would make it in time for graduation which is on the 17th August... and also get the minimum of 73% for my thesis to get 1st class honours...

2 years since I have first arrived in Sydney

2 years ago I arrived in Sydney with my family, who were here to send me off for my studies and to holiday with me.

2 years ago I remember seeing Kevin Ruud being elected on the TV screens of Churchills.

2 years ago it was even colder than now...

2 years ago I was 68 kg.... sigh...

2 years from then, I am on schedule to complete my Thesis after there were positive output from the workshop today. Did some hard work today... saw a few metal piece up and assembled most part of my thesis up...

Finally given a deadline

Thesis dateline: 20th July 2009 (If I want to graduate this semester)

After meeting up with my supervisor on friday afternoon for less than 15 minutes I was told that If I want to do it (Thesis) better I would have to extend my graduation date. (I wouldn't mind doing it better...) That would mean that I would have to graduate with the batch of student completing their degree next semester....

Initially I accepted the idea... but after careful thinking...

...That means I need to get my student VISA extended without doing any subjects.... which is not allowed I suppose... and I would have to do my PR (Permanent Residency)....

...yeah... very complicated.

So I had no choice but to complete it by the following week. My supervisor would not be around and that means it would be quite difficult for him to check through my report. I hope this does not affect my results...

At the same time I would have to complete my thesis writing by 20th July 2009 in order for me to graudate in time....

The Chinese National (PRC) Stereotype in Singapore

Charlene and I have been in a relationship for nearly 5 years. She is a Chinese national staying in Singapore who has just graduated from one of the local universities hoping to find a career here.

The sad thing about her staying in Singapore is that, even though she is here for a legitimate reason, as long as you are a female Chinese national staying in Singapore you are given a certain kind of stereotype.

The typical female Chinese national stereotype in Singapore is the believe that they are here to get married to an old local male to get their Citizenship before divorcing him to get 50% of what he owns.

Charlene recently had an interview with a small local firm based in Geylang that outsources hydroballs. During the interview the interviewer, probably in his early 50's, insults her by commenting on her presence in Singapore as being that of a typical female Chinese national. Obviously she immediately left the interview and blacklisted the company from her university's careers and employment centre's recommendation.

I admit that I once shared the same stereotype. However that changed when I met Charlene. From my point of view most Singaporeans have been brained washed by friends, relatives and the media on how we should label Chinese nationals in Singapore. I can feel that there has always been a negative response to Chinese nationals since they day I was borned. Most Singaporean just hate Chinese nationals for no reason... probably because we are losing our jobs to them or because our nation's image has been tarnished in some way... I really do not know....

No matter what... this has to stop as it prevents Singapore from producing a gracious society.

'I was called a prostitute'

A CHINESE national who accused a senior anti-graft officer of hitting her during an interrogation, took the stand on Friday and said he also asked her about the size of her husband's genitals.

Ms Lin Yanmei, who was then being investigated by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) for entering a marriage of convenience with a Singaporean, said principal senior investigator Neo Siong Leng also called her a prostitute, and an ugly one at that.

Speaking through a court interpreter, Ms Lin, 41, a clinic assistant, said she felt very humiliated, but never expected the interview to turn painful.

Neo, 33, is on trial for throwing a plastic file at Ms Lin and causing a cut on her lip and a chipped tooth on Jan14 last year. He has also been charged with hurting her knee when he kicked a table which hit her leg.

When Ms Lin was at the CPIB building in Lengkok Bahru that morning, she was initially interviewed by another officer.

After lunch, Neo took over.

She said he started the interview by banging a book on the table in the interview room.

He spoke to her very loudly and was very fierce, she said on the witness stand.

Neo kept insisting that she admit that her marriage was a sham and she did not have sex with her husband.

When she denied his accusations, he demanded she tell him the size of her husband's penis and its distinguishing marks, Ms Lin said.

She did so but it did not stop Neo from saying that she had married Mr Chan Hon Kwan, 59, only to become a prostitute here.

Writing this while I am about to go to bed and try to be up early to be productive in the morning. Damn helicopters flying over at this early in the morning (3a.m.)... well only in Sydney...

...I'll try to keep it short and simple...

Yes. Exams are over but not university. All my lessons and assignments are done except my Thesis. It has all to do with the laboratory workshop in Mechanical Engineering.

I can't do the work by my own and have to do most of it in university unless I come out with my own money do them... which I wouldn't... The laboratory workshop has been a problem ever since last semester, when I was told to wait for 4 simple parts, the size like a spherical door knob, that would take less then a day to manufacture. Now with workshop being reduced to two-third its size and with most of the machineries being thrown out. That means it loss its capacity to do a proper work...

Probably one of the hardest working semesters. After opting out of SSA to focus on my Thesis... I think it was worth it...

Results for SESC4211 are out and I think I did fairly okay. 75.25% so far, with the results for another participation assignment that is out of 5% not released yet.

If I maintain an average of =>75% and if my thesis was =>80%... I might get 1st Class... **FINGERS CROSSED** ("=>" : Equals or more)

Just took an online paper this afternoon... man.. it was horrible...

Lecturer did not tell us which section of the lecture is important, with 12 chapters comprising of 25-30 pages each. Anything goes...

It being online makes it an open book exam. Essay questions = lots of explaining + searching to do.

Fortunately I completed it already so that means I can concentrate on my last paper and then thesis all the way...

Got myself a self-inflicted injury while playing around with a ball. Went to Prince of Wales Hospital for a X-ray scan and fortunately everything was in place.

Phew~

I am reliefed because it is the middle of the exam period and I don't want to put myself into any trouble.

Meantime its... "RICE RICE baby"...

How to Google or Bing Instrumental Music

Sometimes when you hear good instrumental music it is just impossible to put a name to the music because they don't have any lyrics.

You simply couldn't enter "Da da daaa da... da da daaa da da da da..." into google or bing and search up on that... (embarrassingly I've tried that before...lol)

...unless...
1) it is from a film or
2) the Radio DJ spells out the title to you.

Was watching the Oscar winning documentary Man on Wire about a French man who walk the thin rope between the former World Trade Centre in US....

...Moving out of topic here...

...I felt the documentary was absolutely inspiring as it shows how one person has to put in lots of time and effort to achieve the personal dreams in life and not be bounded by restrictions.

In that documentary, I was just interested in the way the director integrated the right music at the right moment to express a feeling behind a section of a film. Most part of the film used Michael Nyman's instrumental music, which I am sure most people might have heard of before but not know the title.

If I were directing a movie (probably like Kill Bill) I'll definitely pick his music and use them in the filming... Just imagine... With Michael Nyman's Time Lapse playing in the background...

a defeated hero lying on the ground in a puddle of his own blood with the villain standing over him.
The camera slowly closes up on the Villain's face... and then the Hero's face, showing the contrast in emotion (victory & defeat)...
The picture switches between hero and villain at a certain amount of intervals while still zooming into their face...

(...And when the music stops...)

the hero suddenly looks energetic (like in manga)... gets up and kills the villain with a sword.

Just a thought.

Exams are here and I really should be studying for them... but realised that I lost lots of my energy due to lack of exercise.

Total distance from Kingsford to Maroubra Junction = 2.7 km

Ran from Kingsford to Maroubra Junction and back within less than 30 mins. Pretty refreshing... I ran all the way to the Junction where McDonald's within less than 15 mins... by the time I was on my way back my shin cramped up dude to them being not used to my running pace and from lack of exercise...

Time: 33 mins including 2 mins of stretching and cooling down

But by the time I was back I was exhausted and didn't do much work (probably due to distraction).

Went for 3 hours of soccer today and I promise that I wouldn't be as distracted as yesterday...

Trying to eat well by eating more vegetables, lesser high sugar content items and rejecting any soft (frizzy) drinks in-takes.

Hope that my energy picks up from today onwards as I battle the exams and after that Permanent Residency...

The symptoms of H1N1 (swine) flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with H1N1 (swine) flu. In the past, severe illness (pneumonia and respiratory failure) and deaths have been reported with H1N1 (swine) flu infection in people. Like seasonal flu, H1N1 (swine) flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions.

In children emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:

* Fast breathing or trouble breathing
* Bluish or gray skin color
* Not drinking enough fluids
* Severe or persistent vomiting
* Not waking up or not interacting
* Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
* Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough

Giant pig shot for eating cow at Pilbara cattle station

THIS giant feral pig has been shot dead after it was spotted eating a dead cow on an Australian property.

The picture has been circulating on the internet alongside claims the boar was killed at various locations across Australia.

It was written off as a hoax by many, including WA's Department of Environment and Conservation, and sparked much debate when published on website PerthNow.

But The Sunday Times has confirmed that the pig was shot on a Pilbara cattle station near Newman, 1200km northeast of Perth.

Sources close to the family of the man in the photo have confirmed he is Pilbara pastoralist John Anick and the picture was taken on his property three years ago.

The family refused to talk about the giant boar earlier, for fear that illegal pig hunters would flock to the area.

The source said the 220kg beast was eating a cow when it was first seen by workers mustering cattle in a helicopter. Mr Anick saw it again on a trip to check windmills on the property and shot it.

"I can vouch 100 per cent, I don't even have to say 90 per cent, that it (the photo) was taken in the Pilbara and it is who I said it is,'' the source said.

I hate to sound negative. I bet no one love to hear negative thoughts too.

My thesis is going through a rough moment now as I struggle to have my designs manufactured since the beginning of my Thesis project. Comments from the laboratory suggest that there have been lack of capacity to allow work to be done in time and on schedule.

I have had four small work pieces, no bigger than the size of a computer mouse, submitted near the end of July (3rd week of the session). I have delayed my departure to Singapore to commence my Industrial Training for a week or more after my final exams with the hope that I could get the work piece and conduct experiments that would be crucial for any further developement.

However, it was not completed in time and I had to complete my Industrial Training if not I would put myself at risk of not graduating in time...

(Industrial Training is a requirement to all Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering Department students before graduation. Application to the company would be dependent on the student's individual effort unlike that of NUS or NTU in Singapore. The reports for this training would only be marked at the beginning of the session and its results for an acceptable training would be out by the end of the session.)

... The pieces that I have gotten were produced only after I have returned to Singapore. (More than 12 weeks after I have sent the sketches in for manufacturing.)

I had a discussion with the Thesis Coordinator about my Thesis submission extension yesterday. His response was to allow me the time to do the thesis and marks deduction for late submission would be subjectable.

I was given full support from my supervisor after that discussion with the Thesis Coordinator, that he would assure me no points would be deducted.

My advice...
...to all Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering Department students in UNSW to not do design related projects for their thesis. However if you insist you must, considerations have to be made on having assistance from external workshop to get your designs manufactured.

probably another rough moment in my life again like every other year. Assignments and Thesis. With 3 assignment due next week along with Thesis (another assignment due the following week)... it just gets worst.

thesis is giving me the crapper now. I probably can't get my thesis extended which might produce me a poor result for thesis. constant addition of experiments and delays in the workshop (and probably a few unfortunate events) have resulted my thesis progress to be quite slow.

Should my extension be not accepted, I have to product a thesis report submission by next friday 16:00hrs.

If it gets extended, at least it could buy me some time to manufacture the parts (if the workshop doesn't screw up) to improve the content of my thesis report and also allow future developement of the project.... but then again, I might need to put in more effort should there be any problems when I test the finished product....

From the looks of it, things don't look promising. I hate to be pesimistic but as a young adult I must take things like a man and not be brought down that easily.

Wish me luck....

A position I will never want to put myself in again

I was back in Singapore for less than 4 days to celebrate a family member's wedding and also to see them off before they depart to work overseas. This trip back was probably one of the shortest and most exciting (but anxious) one I have had.

I was among the 125 drivers being tested. Was on my way back home early in the morning after a night of celebrating a family member's wedding... Had a couple of drinks many hours before I drove and was more than sober enough to drive.

With Charlene sitting by my side and the two drunk wedding couple in the back seats I made a way down Buangkok East Drive after exiting from KPE. Then I saw the road block, was called to the side of the road to have my breath taken for alcohol...

I passed the breathalyser test and my family were pretty sure I was going to pass it.... but it was pretty scary.... If I was found to exceed the alcohol limit:

I was going to leave Singapore that evening and could have be taken away by the police.
Charlene doesn't have a driver's license and no one else was sober enough to drive.

My family is probably one of the strongest motivating factor of why I am working hard... and I will make it a point to never put them in distress or in any vulnerable situation anymore... again...

16 held for drink-driving

SIXTEEN drink drivers were arrested in a five-hour islandwide blitz carried out by the Traffic Police on Saturday night, bringing the total number of drink drivers caught so far this year to 1,141.

As part of the operation, road blocks were set up along Buangkok East Drive, Bukit Batok Road and Bishan Road around midnight.

Later, at about 2.30 am, simultaneous road blocks were also set up along Telok Blangah Road, Kampong Bahru Road and Keppel Road to ring-fence the cluster of entertainment outlets and drinking haunts in the vicinity.

Breathalyser tests were administered to 125 motorists, 16 of whom failed and were arrested for drink-driving. A total of 84 persons were also summoned for other traffic-related offences.

The police reiterate that even if the alcohol content in a driver's blood or breath does not exceed the legal limit, one can still be charged for drink driving if he is unable to control his vehicle properly.

Convicted drink drivers will be disqualified from driving for at least 12 months, which would, in effect, invalidate their driving licences.

In addition, first-time offenders can be fined between $1,000 and $5,000, or jailed up to six months, while repeat offenders face a maximum fine of $30,000 and a mandatory jail term of up to three years.

I know this is crazy but I'll be going back to Singapore for the weekend to attend to some family matters.

It's week 10, another 2 more weeks till the end of university classes. Assignments due and thesis are to be handed in... but who cares...

Assignment (No.) :
- FEA (x1 assignment)
- MANF4450 - Accounting (x11 - 1 case study & 10 journal) <--done 2 journals so far - MANF4450 - Manufacturing (x2 - 1 case study & 1 assignment)
- Thesis Writing and experiments (done 1/2 of the writing so far)

...Hope that H1N1 doesn't affect me in any form because it's heading towards the end of university and I'm staying with 4 other housemates all fellow university mates. Quarantine would mean trouble for us. (Fingers crossed) So far there have been 3 confirmed cases of H1N1 in Australia (2 children and a lady). Both of them got the virus when they returned from Los Angeles, one of them has already recovered. Another was just confirmed today as a Victorian boy after arriving at Melbourne.

So far trips back to Singapore should be alright as they would be doing a temperature screening done at the airport. Affected areas recognised by the Ministry of Health (Singapore) at this point are Mexico, USA and Canada. But no restrictions are being implimented so far (for updates refer to MOH Website)

For Australia, from what I know so far similar screening would be conducted for all passengers unlike earlier measure, when it is only done on In-bound passengers from America. (Reference website)

Swine flu has caused so much fear around the world... It has even resulted in some unethical way of culling the pigs due to fear of Swine flu. Overall an enjoyable game with lots of (one-sided) action. I spent about 30 bucks for a ticket and sat about 5 rolls away from the pitch close to the players dug-outs. Although I haven't full understood the game, it was sure worth every penny I spent.

THREE armed men have robbed guards manning a cash-in-transit van in Sydney's east.

About 8.25am (AEST) today two guards were confronted by robbers with their faces covered outside a licensed premises on Anzac Parade, Kingsford, police said.

They stole a sum of cash and escaped in a stolen red Mitsubishi Lancer, with New South Wales registration AR44JG.

Anyone spotting the car is urged not to approach it but to call triple-zero immediately.

A crime scene has been set up and officers from the Forensic Armed Robbery Unit are investigating.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
